Liaise Divorce Solutions serves as something of a resource for people who have questions about divorce. We offer a free consultation to parties who wish to explore the possibility of mediation and many times we are responding to questions on the phone and through the mail that parties have regarding the process.
Many times people will ask us:
“How do we achieve the perfect divorce settlement”?
That’s an easy question to answer. The fact of the matter is that perfect does not exist on this earth. Perfect is the realm of the transcendental or the supernatural. The very best we, or any other divorce mediation service can offer, is a very good settlement.
There are a lot of moving parts to almost every divorce settlement. There will be give and take regarding almost each and every one of these moving parts. No party is going to get everything they want. The very best that we can hope for is that when we are all done both parties walk away a little bit unhappy. If that’s the case, we know that a pretty good result has occurred.
Perfect vs. Good
There is an old saying, “don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good”. Nowhere is this more true than in divorce mediations. There is only so much time that one can reasonably spend negotiating the nuances and details of the divorce agreement. What often ends up happening in this pragmatic world of ours is that you get the agreement close enough so that both parties are reasonably well satisfied and it’s time to stop and get on with your life.
Lessons From Lorne Michaels
The very successful television producer Lorne Michaels, who has been responsible for over 25 years of Saturday Night Live television shows and many motion pictures, has some words of wisdom for those of us involved in complicated endeavors. “The show doesn’t go on because it’s perfect; the show goes on because it’s 11:30.”
There is wisdom in that for all of us. There comes a point where you have worked on something to the nth degree and it is time to put it to rest.
Moving Toward Perfection
Here at Liaise we are expert at helping people get as close as reasonably possible to the “perfect” agreement and then putting that stipulated agreement before a judge and making it the order of the court.
Almost perfect is the best you can reasonably hope for in this life and it is our great pleasure to assist in accomplishing this worthwhile goal.
